Introduction

Spreadsheet is large sheet where information are kept in rows and column format. The information can be text or numbers. Your report card and the bill that you get from shopkeeper after you purchase the things are the spread sheet. This is very useful as we can manipulate numbers. We can do different arithmetic operating with numbers such as addition, subtracting , multiplication and division. It can perform all kinds of calculation which complex. We can make even bar graph, pi charts etc.

Some common features of excel are as follows:

  • It is windows based application but it is also available in MAC
  • It is user friendly interface to work with
  • In excel series of data can be filled in rows and column automatically
  • It allows adding large range of data just clicking Auto sum tool
  • It supports various types of charts to represent data graphically
  • It helps us to work with large amount data from different worksheet
  • It helps to check the spelling of text in cell
  • It allows sorting, filtering, searching and filling data

click on start or window icon on task bar

search for excel

on click on excel icon


or you can open run ( window +r)


or path right click and hover over new drop down and click on on new and click on new spreadsheet worksheet


Basic components of MS excel

Quick access toolbar

we can access the things that we need frequently and we can even put the required icon/ functionality on Quick access toolbar


Rows are arranged horizontally in a worksheet. There are many row in spreadsheet. From 1 to 1,048,576 row.


Column are arranged vertically in a work sheet. There are total 16384 column in MS excel.


Cell is the intersection of row and column. Each cell can store a single item of data. This data can be number, text a date value or mathematical formulas. Cell is the smallest building block of spreadsheet. Each cell has cell address or cell name. for that you need to see the column and row. eg A1 is the first and uppermost cell of ms excel.

Formula is a sequence of operating that is performed on one or more constant value inside the cell. Usually a formula will result in a new value that is also stored inside some cell


Formula Bar is long bar present right side of the Name box. This is the place we use functions and formula in a worksheet. It also displays the value entered in the excel cell.
